On November 10, 2016, Johannes Bohnen spoke on a panel at the European Academy Berlin together with Thomas Nehls (former ARD correspondent in Washington and New York) and Malte Lehming (Senior Editor, Der Tagesspiegel) about the significance of the election outcome in the United States. For Dr. Bohnen, Trump's election was a political earthquake, not only for the United States of America but also for Europe and the rest of the world. His election, he said, was another victory for populists who attack globalization and social progress from the right and left alike. Populism is also always an indication of deficits in democratic governance. In this respect, the middle class should politicize itself to put constructive pressure on the political elite.
